Boston police Detective Larry Ellison is not optimistic that significant police reforms will happen any time soon.
Ellison is former president of the Massachusetts Association of Minority Law Enforcement Officers and is one of the nine members of the new state Peace Officers Standards and Training Commission.
One year after the murder of George Floyd, some reforms have been implemented to improve police accountability but Ellison says racism is prevalent within BPD ranks.
In an interview this week to talk about the year since Floyd s killing sparked nationwide protests, Ellison said he felt the need to speak out about what s happening within the department.

As of May 19, six mayoral candidates have secured the required 3,000 signatures needed to qualify for the September primary ballot, according to the city’s election department. There will likely be more to come. A total of 17 people had filed to gather signatures to run for mayor as of May 11.
Those who have been certified for the ballot already include Mayor Kim Janey, John Barros, and City Councillors Andrea Campbell, Annissa Essaibi George, Michelle Wu and State Rep. Jon Santiago. Former Boston Police Commissioner endorses Annissa Essaibi George for Mayor

Former Boston Police Commissioner William Gross endorsed at-Large City Councillor Annissa Essaibi George for Mayor during an event in Mattapan on Thursday afternoon. Gross, who resigned as the city’s first Black police chief in February, called it “an easy decision.”
“This is the person that I wholeheartedly believe, can bring the city together, or make it more cohesive and make Boston what it is today and continue to make it number one in the country,” Gross said.
