Ipswich police follow state s lead in priority changes

Premium Content Subscriber only ENSURING a more effective response to crime in the state’s fastest growing region is all a matter of getting your priorities right. Ipswich District Superintendent David Cuskelly said the response to the recent announcement of a realignment of the way police respond to calls for service had been received eagerly within his ranks. The region’s top cop says the new system will free up frontline officers for preventive and disruptive operations, instead of being caught up in non-urgent or administrative work. “This is all driven by demand management,” Superintendent Cuskelly said. “There is a lot of demand on the police as we know, which is why Commissioner Katarina Carroll initiated a review when she first came in.”

Busy Queensland cops forced to handle some crimes over the phone

Commissioner Katarina Carroll said the police service was “finding it very, very difficult to cope with” the demand.

Big changes to how police deal with crime

Police will change the way they respond to crime and not immediately attend lower priority jobs such as break-ins to free up resources for serious incidents such as domestic violence. The changes will mean police will send scenes of crime officers to break-ins instead of general duties when they are deemed non-urgent or low risk; they will organise a future date to meet with callers for lower risk incidents, or in some cases deal with them over the phone or on the internet. Commissioner Katarina Carroll announced a new police code after a review of the service found demand had increased by 45 per cent in the last five years and triple-0 calls had increased by 65 per cent.
