FORT LAUDERDALE — Pickleball players might love the idea of having 42 courts just a stone’s throw from their neighborhood. But that’s not the crowd that showed up at a City Hall meeting on Tuesday, August 22, to blast the elected leaders of Fort Lauderdale — even though only two of the five on the dais were the ones who approved a $20 million project that will bring an 8-acre pickleball .
After more than four years as Fort Lauderdale city attorney, Alain Boileau was sent packing just two weeks after three new commissioners are sworn in. Commissioner Steve Glassman defended him, saying the firing was motivated by personal grudges.
Fans of the sport are thrilled, but nearby residents are worried about extra traffic and noise from bouncing pickleballs. And some say the city is turning over yet another slice of green space to a developer.
Only hotel guests and beach chair customers will be able to order up a cool one. And they’ll need to be sitting in the cocktail zone, between Sunrise Boulevard and Bahia Mar south of Las Olas.
