WHEELING Fire hydrants in Ohio County are in need of regular maintenance, and that is a concern for the county’s fire chiefs.
Valley Grove Fire Chief John Gearry, also the new president of the Ohio County Fire Chiefs Association, addressed county commissioners Tuesday night on the issue of making sure the county’s hydrants operate properly.
The Ohio County Public Service District oversees 624 fire hydrants and “at least 20 are absolutely not working,” according to Commission President Randy Wharton.

FAIRMONT â Springtime means budget prep time for local governments.
Three outside agencies asked the Marion County Commission on Wednesday if they can be included in the countyâs upcoming budget cycle.
Marcella Yaremchuk spoke on behalf of the Three Rivers Festival as well as the Womanâs Club of Fairmont. The festival will take place at Palatine Park May 27-29.

WHEELING The Ohio County-provided prevention resource officer at Middle Creek Elementary was eliminated in the PRO contract recently approved between the county and Ohio County Schools, but there already has been a demonstrated need for an officer there, according to Sheriff Tom Howard.
The day after the PRO was eliminated from the school, Howard said he received a call from school district administration asking that a deputy be provided at the school to handle traffic issues.
