because if we can hear it with the tpl you re only talking a couple of kilometers. so not that huge of a range. thank you. yeah, commander marks, this is david soucie, how are you? what i d like to ask you doing well out here in the pacific. okay, great. what i d like to ask you, when you saw that two-hour connection, when you were getting the pings for two hours, and i m hearing they were not able to be re-acquired. i am hearing you went to the south. would you not go to the north? it appears because they were so far away from the two hours they may just be the refracted ping audio that you re picking up down below. is the plan to go north at this point? you know that is a good point. with this initial two-hour detection, when we did re-acquire for a very short time in that 13-minute block, and that was as we turned around on that reciprocal course.

but we are searching the entire area. it is just a matter of slowly and methodically doing that. you have to realize we are only moving at the pace a person can walk, so a couple of miles an hour. so you have this dimension of depth. so what s really miraculous, this very first hit we got, it was only at 300 meters. so that s very shallow. and actually not where you would expect to get some detection. so right there is kind of a miraculous event there. once we heard it, we lowered tpl down to 1,400 meters. then really you want to get it at more like 3,000 meters. so we are searching the whole area, it s just a matter of doing it methodically and adjusting the depth as always. commander marks, it is good to have you on, i think the nhl
pingers from the black box of malaysian air flight 370. and one would think if there were black boxes out there the scientists would have told the authorities. absolutely, again, this is not a signal that occurs in nature. this is man made. and everything says this is malaysian air 370. david, time of course is of the essence because of the batteries. how much more time do think they will try to take to create these pings? we just heard from commander marks who said they would probably go two days without hearing pings before they would put in the bluefin. so if we go for one day it might go a day without a ping, then the next day they will get a ping. so until they go two straight days without any pings they will keep that tpl in the water. and tim, what is the next step? well, as david said they will keep the tpl in the water as long as they can.
a big factor in how small they are getting that field, and i think they are going to have to analyze this data. they got two hits. that two vectors they can dial into a coordinate and i think that s a lot more information than we give it credit for. two hours of time and then 15 minutes of time and then maybe they can glean some information off of that. may be an underwater version of the inmarsat data systems that we ll be using. steve, he said without picking up again on that signal, the search will be a big challenge and almost felt like luck picking up that signal. is there a back up plan? i think, again, it was impressive what commander marks said. the scope of this international effort and competence of the people involved in it, gives me and i think also nobody is going nobody is close to giving up on this.
