Friday, public holiday in Falklands; anniversary of the great naval battle 8 December 1914

Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands elected government has announced the following program for Friday 8 December 2023 to commemorate the victory of the Naval engagements of 8th December 1914 in the South Atlantic.

Falklands commemorated Remembrance Day on Sunday 12th November

Sunday 12th November was Remembrance Sunday in the Falklands, and the occasion was commemorated with an annual service recalling the 105th anniversary of the end of the First World War, beginning with a service at Christ Church Cathedral in Stanley.

Mount Pleasant Complex runway in Falkland Islands undergoes successful refurbishment

The Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has completed a project worth almost £7 million to extend the lifespan of the runways and taxiways at the Mount Pleasant Complex airfield in the Falkland Islands. The project was awarded to Mitie in June 2022, and was undertaken by sub-contractor Gatwick Construction, with work commencing at the end of January.

Thursday 8 December, Anniversary of the Battle of the Falkland Islands

Gilbert House, seat of the Falkland Islands Government elected Legislative Assembly has announced that the following program has been arranged for Thursday 8 December 2022 to commemorate the victory of the Naval engagements of 8th December 1914, on which day 6 British sailors lost their lives and a number of others died later from injuries received during the battle. 2,260 German sailors also lost their lives.

Falklands: Covid-19 community transmission confirmed at MPC, protective measures recommended

Protective measures for all Falkland Islands residents are being advised following a number following a number of cases of COVID-19 being confirmed at MPC. The Commander British Forces South Atlantic Islands implemented a number of precautionary measures at Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC), following a number of positive COVID-19 cases which were identified outside of quarantine it was announced on April 15. This action enabled BFSAI and the Falkland Islands Government to understand the situation in depth.
