that combat outpost. and even if drinking was not directly, did not directly contribute to that incident, in which 16 civilians were killed, it is sure in this investigation that some of those commanders are probably in deep trouble and could get demoted or even lose their jobs in the military as a result. i will say that there is no evidence, however, that alcohol contributed or that command climate did, but there are serious questions about what was going on at that outpost. as far as staff sergeant robert bales goes, it is still second that there will be charges filed against him later this week and the charges should come out of that u.s. military command there in afghanistan. thank you very much. in just a few hours, polls close. illinois primary, if mitt romney wins tonight, can he turn around his perception problem we ve
correspondent jim miklaszewski. allen talked about an investigation into the chain of command. those who were around sergeant bales leading up to his alleged crime. that s right. everybody suspected this would eventually happen. but it s the first time today that in his testimony, general john allen revealed there is in fact an investigation underway into the command climate. just what was the level of discipline at that forward operating base where those special operations forces were could not village stability operations. they want to know why since he was that a special operator was he assigned to that unit. and what was the combat relationship between him and the others on the base. and although allen didn t explain it or reveal it today, it is also expected that part of that investigation will look into why was there alcohol on
part of the afghanistan government in working with the united states and in some case, mistrust in working with the afghan people. and just one quick point. you know, we heard from the top u.s. military commander there in afghanistan, general john allen who condemned the actions of this one individual soldier as appalling and promised justice. but it does raise a question here on the heels of that koran burning incident. and it s something the u.s. military calls command climate. and there are some questions being raised as to whether as the u.s. forces prepare to withdrawal, whether some forces are not perhaps paying as much attention or not as disciplined in case of the koran burning and maybe in this case, how did that soldier get off the base in the middle of the morning una unaccompanied? that s a question that has to be asked here at the pentagon and there in afghanistan as to
language that occurred right after the burning of the koran. and i know it is really too early to tell exactly what happened in this case but with these two incidents, so closely occurring to each other, one has to start wondering about what the military calls the command climate there in afghanistan. our soldiers are the means rsh are the leaders there becoming a little slack perhaps in their discipline or enforcement of the rules and as the u.s. military is preparing to withdraw from afghanistan. u.s. military officials insist that is not the case. but, you know, this is this is too too much of a coincidence so close together. not to have people at least question what is going on in there there in afghanistan and has the discipline eroded as forces are preparing to withdraw. well, muk mjim miklaszewski, thank you for your insight.
still in the area. there s some speculation that one of marines may be out of service but none of that is clear yet. so far they have not identified a single one of these marines and the investigation continues. not only into these marines, but into their commanders to see if there was a command climate that could have fostered this kind of offensive activity. how worried are our military leaders about what this video could do to the long term operation in afghanistan? flthere s always that concer. there s been some cases of these events much worse than that where they feared there would be
