A week ago Commack School District attempted to make mask wearing optional for students after the New York State Department of Health changed its official mask recommendations on April 9. But Gov. Cuomo s office overruled the district s decision, that it said was made because the schools were able to maintain the required social distancing necessary.
The rally is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., at Commack High School before the Board of Education holds at 7:30 p.m. meeting.

NEW YORK One school district in New York thought it had found a way to unmask its children in the classroom, but no sooner had they announced masks could come off than the state said, Not so fast.
Commack School District officials on Long Island said an interpretation of the April 9 guidance from the state Department of Health, which said, Six feet of distance is required when eating meals or snacks, or drinking, or other times masks must be removed, meant that masks were not necessary since the district has diligently maintained 6 feet of social distancing for all students.

COMMACK, NY Commack students will still need to wear masks after the school district previously announced that masks would be optional in classrooms and physical education as long as social distancing was followed. The reversal comes after the state overruled the district s decision on masks, according to the district.
The district said it made the decision earlier this week based on its interpretation of April 9 guidance from the New York State Department of Health, which reads in part: Six feet of distance is required when eating meals or snacks, or drinking, or other times masks must be removed.

LONG ISLAND, NY A new study found that 26 Long Island school districts are among those that spend the most money per student. The AAA State of Play recently released a list of the top 50 school districts in the nation that spend the most money on its pupils.
The number one spot went to the Syosset School District which spends $32,125 per student. Another Long Island school district, the Middle Country School District in Brookhaven, ranked at number 50, spending $22,881 per student.
