The site boasts a 180-degree view of the entire Combe de Savoie Valley. The fortress is one of the most-visited monuments in Rhône-Alpes and the best preserved in the Savoy region. According to Mr. Berard, the site has existed since the 4th century when it was involved in monitoring the junction of the Isere and Arc rivers and was converted into a prison by the Counts of Savoy in the mid-16th century. Its notoriety at this time was such that it was compared to the Bastille, an infamous 14th century fortress in Paris.
