The family of Ma’Khia Bryant, the 16-year-old Black Ohio girl shot to death by police after lunging at two women with a knife last week, is calling for a federal investigation into both her shooting and her placement in the foster care system.
Family attorney Michelle Martin made the demands at a news conference alongside Ma’Khia’s biological parents, siblings and other relatives Tuesday.
She said the girl’s life had been cut short by many of our failing systems, including the Columbus Division of Police and Ohio’s child services agencies.

The Pickerington Local School District says it has placed an employee on administrative leave following a recent social media post.
In a released statement, the district says “Today, we placed Jessie Burr on administrative leave from her position as a school social worker while the District reviews complaints concerning her recent social media activity.”
The post in question, which is signed by Jessie Burr as the president of the Central Ohio Police Families Association, is an open letter to a Facebook page saying in part “Dear girl wearing pink…what I am asking you for is to tell the truth. Tell the world how Nick [Reardon] saved you just days ago.”

A police officer in Los Angeles has reached out to LeBron James in relation to a post the LA Lakers star shared on social media about a police-involved shooting that happened in Ohio.
LAPD Officer Deon Joseph noted in a lengthy post on Facebook that James’s understanding of policing is “so off base and extreme” and hopes he will have a conversation with an officer instead of constantly painting such a diverse group with a broad brush.
“Your current stance on policing is so off base and extreme. Your tweet that targeted a police officer in Ohio who saved a young woman’s life was irresponsible and disturbing,” he wrote.
