Pagels’ death was the result of a five-car chain-reaction crash in Washington, D.C. He was struck by a vehicle at 7:30 p.m. on April 9, while cycling on Massachusetts Avenue. Earlier that day, Pagels had received his second COVID-19 vaccine and tweeted about the dangers of cycling through the New York Avenue/Montana Avenue traffic circle.
