Good morning, i would like to welcome everyone. To subcommittee is called to order. This is one of the key subcommittees of the House Oversight Reform Committee. The title of todays hearing is mixed signals the administrations policy on marijuana. This is the third in a series of hearings that we have been c condu conducting in the subcommittee to look at the changes in the law and also some of the practices that we are seeing across the country in regards to the use and enforcement of law relating to marijuana. The order of business will start with Opening Statements. Myself and other members that wish to be recognized. When we finish with that we have to panelist this morning. We have the delegate from the district ms. Norton who we will hear from first and then we have a panel of 14 witnesses that will we will hear from in the second panel. We gather today and i will start out by saying with an Opening Statement. In fulfilling an important responsibility of the congress and that is
We dont know. There are allegations right now, but there are anecdote after anecdote that i am hearing, that our colleagues are hearing. Just one example. I talked to a member of congress who shared with me a story about the day before, seeing a group of people in maga hats not wearing masks. And at the time her concern was covid, saying why are they here, theyre not supposed to be here . Went up to a Capitol Police officer saying, why are they here, the answer being, there is nothing i can do about it because they were invited by a member of congress. This was underneath in the tunnels, not easy to get to. Its that kind of thing that has to be investigated. It is no small thing when she talked about trust. Its remarkable that we are sitting here wondering whether or not members of congress can trust one another, and they are saying openly, several of them now, that theyre worried about their own safety, not just from without, not just from outside but from within. From members who are
Didnt send u. S. Troops in to defend the capitol because he was worried about a quote, military coup. The other breaking news, moments ago, one of the few republicans in congress to speak out against former President Trumps continuing election lies has now been ousted from her leadership role. House republicans pushed out congresswoman liz cheney as the number three ranked member of gop leadership. According to a member in the room, as the vote happened, cheney was booed when she criticized the former president in her opening remarks. Afterwards cheney remained defiant after her colleagues endorsed a falsehood over truth. I will do everything i can to ensure that the former president never again gets anywhere near the oval office. We have seen the danger that he continues to provoke with his language. We have seen his lack of commitment and dedication to the constitution, and i think its very important that we make sure, whomever we elect, is somebody who will be faithful to the consti
Transmitted, not willing to really engage on questions of security around the capitol beyond that these are things that need to get investigated. I mean, the sense i got from pelosi here is she is trying to keep her caucus locked in, keep the focus on the work that needs to be done here, and keep the possibilities of the transmittal of that article of impeachment on the table, at least as long as donald trump is still the president of the United States. Garrett haake, well have to leave it there because its the top of the hour. That does it for me. Andrea mitchell reports starts right now. Thank you, craig. Good day. Im Andrea Mitchell in washington where Muriel Bowser will be speaking moments from now on the elaborate coordinated efforts by officials to keep the capitol safe. Only after news that a rehearsal for the inaugural was postponed due to unspecified security concerns. The focus on security is
immediately apparent throughout washington, which is in a lockdown never seen before
