that s the term they used. they used it to make it arab-free and they succeeded. oftentimes you ll hear stories, well, who told the folsz flee? well, when you have armed militias coming in through your towns stealing your land, they are killing your children, you re going to get populations fleeing. at the same time, ben-gurion is making war plans. you know there s going to be a war and it s not just against local palestinians. but it s against foreign arab countries as well. at once british officially leave, a new jewish state will be declared, and with it, a war for jerusalem. and how important it is to know who you are and to know where you came from. we re discovering together. it s been an amazing gift. ho ho ho!
palestine. king abdullah was certainly anxious to walk hand in hand, so to speak, with great britain. he was a brilliant political maneuverer, but abdullah was playing a very dangerous game. many regarded it as a betrayal, is betrayal to arab nationalism and palestinians. many other region regarded him as a semi-collaborator. but abdullah isn t the only leader with ambitions of claiming palestine. look, the jews, after the end of the world war, british policy on immigration would change. here the only reason remnants of the jews of europe. no other country was opening their doors to them, and the british said, no, not on our watch, they re not coming.
disaster. it was the day where basically the dream of having a palestinian state ended. what s celebrated in israel as a wonderful day of independence, for palestinian it s a day that basically meant they have lost any of their national rights. ben-gurion was the first prime minister. ben-gurion was very happy, obviously. he thought he had a tremendous amount more to do. so it was a very emotional moment for many. there was no time or no reflection. and so on may 15th, five arab states declared war against israel. egypt, lebanon, iraq, and syria, but also transjordan that was loyal to king abdullah. the arab countries that are coming in were not just trying
it s been two decades since the end of the first world war. and while another global conflict looms on the horizon, jerusalem is already in chaos. the british continued to control the holy city through a system known as the mandate. the mandate system was a way the british were going to be able to colonize palestine without calling it colonization. it was supposed to train these countries for independence. the british played everybody to their advantage. they told the jews you want a home in palestine? here s your land. they told the arabs, you want to be independent and you want to rule yourself, you want to have
the arabs thought that this was going to be a decisive victory. it was at least announced and pushed out via the different propaganda machines that this is the time to push the jews into the sea and the state of israel, and reclaim the land again. for the jewish community who just lost 6 million, the feeling was that people were facing a crucial moment in their existence. keep fighting.
