Two Robotics teams from Sheridan County competed in the virtual FIRST Tech Challenge competition on Saturday, April 17.
In the FIRST Tech Challenge teams are required to build a robot and perform tasks that in turn score points. The tasks range from shooting objects, moving objects, and much more.
The teams are also required to create and present an engineering notebook to the judges.
G-R Overdrive, a 4-H based team from Gordon, and Mike’s Dream, a community based team from Hay Springs, each competed. The state of Nebraska does not have a Tech Challenge available for these teams to compete in, so they joined up with Colorado to provide these students with the opportunity.
There is a square practice field marked in blue painter s tape on the floor of a classroom at the W. D. & Mary Baker Smith Career Center in Lafayette. On Monday, a 20-pound metal robot navigates the field, rolling on its wheels toward flat orange rings that it will scoop up with a silver arm.
It sucks up the ring and launches it out toward a three-part goal, aiming each time for either the low, middle or high hole to earn points. The FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robot also can pick up and carry a wobble item from one square to another.
