By his own admission, James Gosling has always been a geek. Growing up in Calgary in the 1960s, he was drawn to building things from mechanical parts and went dumpster diving to find pieces to use in personal projects.
After a tour of the University of Calgary, a teenaged Gosling began sneaking into the school’s computer science labs and discovered a new passion: writing code.

“The big advantage of doing software at that age was that I could do it and it wouldn’t cost me money,” Gosling said.
