Changes to the law will take effect next month. The hope is these changes benefit developers, while restricting local government's power to regulate affordable housing.
In January, the Collier County Affordable Housing Advisory Committee unanimously re-elected Joseph Trachtenberg as its chairman. This week, the Collier County Board of County Commissioners unanimously removed him. Trachtenberg said his removal was because he spoke up publicly about inaction by the commissioners. A commissioner seemed to agree that his public comments were the issue.
After protests from landlords and the county’s board of realtors, Collier County commissioners repealed a requirement that landlords raising rents give tenants 60 days notice. Commissioners had approved the ordinance, requiring the notice if rental rates increased by more than 5%.
