Elmhurst’s student newspaper, The Leader, took home nine honorable mentions and 11 awards, including second place statewide in the Critical Review category, at the 2023 Illinois College Press Association (ICPA) conference.
Marianna Bacallao is WVIK Quad Cities NPR's 2020-2021 Fellowship Host/Reporter. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from Mercer University's Center for Collaborative Journalism and served as Editor-in-Chief for the student newspaper, The Cluster. After interning with Georgia Public Broadcasting in 2018, she was selected as a 2019 John M. Couric Fellowship Reporter at GPB, where she contributed to the statewide newscast. She was a spring 2020 intern, helping produce GPB's daily news talk show, Political Rewind. She also had the pleasure of interning with The Macon Telegraph and CBS affiliate, 13WMAZ. Georgia College Press Association awarded her first place in Sports Photography and Best Review, and she ranked third in the state for Best Photo Essay twice.
DeKALB – The Northern Star won 14 awards from the 2023 Illinois College Press Association Awards. ICPA awards were distributed to Illinois student-run newspapers in 36 categories of competition. Of those winnings, the Northern Star placed first six times, second twice, third twice and received five honorable mentions. Of the group nominations, the Northern Staff.
The Daily Northwestern won 33 awards at the 2023 Illinois College Press Association convention held in Chicago this past weekend. The contest recognized works produced from fall 2021 through fall 2022. Isabelle Sarraf (Medill ’22) was editor in chief in Winter Quarter 2022 and Medill senior Jacob Fulton was editor in Spring and Fall Quarters.
The Daily Northwestern took home 29 awards at the Illinois College Press Association convention held over the weekend. At the organization’s annual conference, held Friday and Saturday in Chicago, The Daily won 13 first place awards, 13 second place awards and 3 honorable mentions.
