Welcome and thank you for making the effort to get here. Adam think any of us thought that i dont think any of us thought that the iran story we would be focusing on would be the story, the story of protest, domestic unrest, the biggest demonstrations we have seen since 2009. Whatever one expected to be talking about this week and next week was the question of sanctions waivers, decertification of the gcpoa, and efforts of congress to annul to amend legislation. That is all still in play, but now it has been cast in a different light by what is happening inside iran. We have convened a panel of our experts to discuss this issue. The protests in iran and their implications for the region and u. S. Policy from a lot of different angles. Im going to introduce folks in the order i am going to call on them. We will start with patrick clauson. He is our senior fellow and director of research at the institute. He is going to look at the background of these protests. Where are they coming from

Folks, thank you for making the effort to get mere on this snow day in washington. Its not really a snow day, but half an inch on the ground. That qualifies as a snow day here in washington. Needless to say, i dont think any of us expected that here in the first week of 2018 the iran story we would be focused on would be this story, a story of protests, domestic unrest, really, in the sort of biggest demonstrations weve seen since 2009. On the contrary, i think that what everybody expected to be talking about this week and next week was the question of sanctions, waivers, decertification of the jcpoa and efforts in congress to amend the legislation. And that obviously, all still is in play, but its now been cast in i think a quite different light by whats happening inside iran. And so, we have convened a panel of our experts to discuss this issue, the protests in iran and their implications for not just the region, not just iran, but also for u. S. Policy. From a lot of different angle

Will anything change if were now talking about national webs as opposed to global. Well i think this is a debate thats been going on ever since the internet came into being just how you try and regulate across borders and were dealing with a number different populations a number of different Legal Systems and coming together and coming your way of ways to make it all mesh together in the same way is going to be extremely difficult but increasingly i think its just an example of the communications medium that is now start to get to grips both on the platform perspective from a user perspective with the fact that what happens online has very real offline consequences so certainly we like to see more regulation what form that will take i think remains to be seen. Paula do you think were going to see countries working together now in the battle against cyber crime im sorry do you think well see countries cooperating working together in the fight against cyber criminals or is it really now
