Firefighters were quickly on the scene, but it only took minutes for the fire to take hold of the Washington Valley Rd home. The other two occupants of the house – Colin s sister Rona and her partner – were not at home when the fire occurred. Rona was babysitting just up the road at Mt Vernon Pl when a friend of her daughters phoned to ask if the shop next door was on fire. It was then she noticed the smoke billowing from down the street. Her nephew went down to check it out and returned with some bad news. “I bawled all my way down there – he managed to get me a drink with some ice in it – I’m prone to panic attacks, and they were setting in by the time I got there.”
