ST. JOSEPH Through the first five seasons of the Jefferson City Renegades’ short history, there were still a few milestones yet to be checked off.
But the Renegades completed the rest of the list in the last week, hosting and winning their first MINK League playoff game, winning their first South Division championship to punch their ticket to their first Championship Series and they capped it off by knocking off the three-time defending champion St. Joseph Mustangs to claim their first league title.
On paper, the Jefferson City Renegades enter their first-ever MINK League Championship Series as the underdog against the St. Joseph Mustangs. The Mustangs ended the regular season with the league’s best record at 29-15 and are looking for their fourth consecutive MINK League title when the best-of-3 series opens up at 7 p.m. today at Vivion Field.
The Jefferson City Renegades have gone through a lot of firsts this season. They placed second in the South Division for the first time (their first time placing higher than third), which led them to host their first playoff game. They won their first division title Tuesday and starting at 7 p.m. today, they will play in their first MINK League Championship Series.
For the first time in the organization’s six-season history, the Jefferson City Renegades are headed to the MINK League Championship Series. The Renegades punched their ticket by claiming the South Division championship Tuesday at the Joplin Outlaws, jumping out to a big lead early and then holding on late for a 9-5 victory.
The plan for Saturday night’s game against the Joplin Outlaws changed Saturday morning when the Jefferson City Renegades found out they did not hold the potential tiebreaker against the Outlaws. Instead of business as usual, the Renegades used Saturday’s contest to knock some rust off for the guys who have not seen as much playing time lately as the team prepares for the start of the MINK League playoffs Monday.
