Global wildlife trade is causing 60% fall in species abundance

The international wildlife trade is causing more than a 60 per cent fall in species abundance, a new study reveals.   An international team of researchers, including experts from the University of Sheffield, performed a meta-analysis of the wildlife trade from 31 studies.  They found a 62 per cent fall in species abundance overall, as well as an 80 per cent decline in abundance specifically for endangered species, due to both legal and illegal trade.  There was also even declines as high as 56 per cent in protected areas, according to the experts, who say current protective measures fail animal species in the wild. Unsustainable harvesting, including hunting, trapping, fishing and logging – which often occurs in protected areas – is one of the biggest threats to biodiversity.

Shoplifter jailed for stealing chocolate from Co-op | Runcorn and Widnes World

Colin Poole A SHOPLIFTER who stole nearly £200 of chocolate from a convenience store has been jailed. Colin Poole pinched £180 of chocolate bars from the Co-op on Hale Road in Widnes during two visits on Friday, January 29. The 39-year-old also took meat worth £101 from a shop on Fir Park the following day. He had been handed a criminal behaviour order by a court only days earlier, which banned the persistent thief from entering any Co-op store in the town. Poole, of no fixed address, admitted three counts of thefts and breaching a CBO at Warrington Magistrates Court on Monday, February 1, and was handed 24 weeks behind bars.

A MAN who stole £180 worth of chocolate on two shoplifting sprees at a store in Chester has been jailed. Colin Poole, 39, of no fixed address carried out the thefts at the shop he had been banned from entering. The chocolate was taken during two visits to the Co-op store on Hale Road in Widnes on Friday, January 29. Just four days earlier a five-year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) was imposed on Poole, banning the persistent shoplifter from entering any Co-op store in Widnes and concealing items prior to payment at any retail premises in Cheshire. Poole also stole £101 worth of meat from a convenience store in the Fir Park area of Widnes on Saturday, January 30.
