In his 1922 poem  The Wasteland, T.S. Eliot famously calls April the cruelest month. That sentiment rings especially true today, as we continue to grapple with the current conditions and long-term effects of coronavirus which has ravaged the world. For Eliot, who wrote his masterpiece in the aftermath of the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, the hope and renewal symbolized by springtime felt empty and precarious. Who could blame us if we find ourselves tempted to embrace Eliot s pessimism? It s been a devastating year of uncertainty and loss for so many. The virus is still raging in places like India and Brazil, as we watch helplessly in relative safety. And yet nature carries on, with her heavy rains, budding trees, and blazing forsythia. Springtime in New England much like a virus is not affected by what we humans believe, or feel ready for. She plows ahead, nonetheless, with her bright agenda of sunshine and hydrangea.
