TPWD awards $2 85M in recreational trail grants; PPC allocated $200,000

Mineral Wells Index AUSTIN — The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission approved $2.84 million dollars in grants to fund 18 motorized and non-motorized recreational trail-related projects across the state. In Palo Pinto County, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Division is the recipient of a $200,000 grant for the Palo Pinto Mountains State Park Trails Phase 2. The project includes construction of approximately six miles of natural surface multi-use trail for activities such as hiking, equestrian and mountain biking. The National Recreational Trails Fund funds recreational trail construction, renovation and acquisition. The grants are funded from a portion of the federal gas tax generated by gasoline purchases for off-road motorcycles and four-wheelers. Thirty percent of the total NRTF grants must be earmarked for motorized recreational trails, while another 30 percent must be spent on non-motorized trail projects. The remaining 40 percent is discretionary.

Texas history remembering the massacre at Goliad

KEN BRIDGES The month of March 1836 began with high hopes and idealism for Texas forces trying to free themselves from Mexico, but a string of military disasters pushed the Texas army to the edge of collapse.  In the midst of these losses, one of the darkest incidents of the war occurred as more than 400 prisoners were executed at Goliad.  The Texas Revolution began in November 1835 after long-simmering disputes with Mexico exploded into open warfare.  Events in Texas were part of a series of uprisings and rebellions that spread across Mexico, which had the effect of eroding the forces still loyal to the government.  The commander of the Mexican Army, Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, declared in December that any foreign prisoners taken would be immediately executed. Santa Anna was president of Mexico 11 times in its turbulent early history, willing to overthrow elected governments and subvert Mexican law whenever it suited him.
