In the ninth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, the Washington Nationals selected Texas Longhorns right-handed pitcher Cole Quintanilla with the No. 263 pick overall.
A local product out of Cedar Park. Quintanilla had a big-time junior season, going 7-1 with a 0.65 ERA while striking out 94 batters in 53.2 innings pitched, but underwent Tommy John surgery the following year and used a redshirt season on the Forty Acres in 2018 to rehabilitate.
In 2019, Quintanilla was solid out of the bullpen, leading Texas with five saves, finishing the year with a 4.05 ERA as opponents batted .250 against him. During the pandemic-shortened season, however, Quintanilla struggled in his five appearances with an 8.31 ERA, though he did show some promise in a four-inning start against UTSA in which he only allowed one earned run and struck out five.

Ty Madden will always call the Forty Acres home but now, he leaves it to head to the professional level.
And while he might not have been selected in the first round, Madden’s new home should make him a star in the making for a rebuilding club.
Madden was selected by the Detroit Tigers 32nd overall in the 2021 MLB Draft. The selection becomes the highest by a Texas player since 2013 when Corey Knebel was drafted No. 39 overall by the Detroit Tigers.

The 2021 MLB Draft starts on Sunday at 6 p.m. Central on MLB Network and ESPN, running for 20 rounds, shortened from the typical 40 rounds, and lasting through Tuesday.
The Texas Longhorns should see right-hander Ty Madden selected in the first round he’s the No. 19 prospect overall by ESPN. A Texas starting pitcher has not gone in the first round since Taylor Jungmann and the Longhorns haven’t had any player selected that highly since reliever Cory Knebel was picked No. 39 in 2013.
