Blighted Boats: Meet the Worst Russian Submarine Accidents

Tragic accidents can happen at sea even to some of the best navies. Key point: Submarine accidents do happen. They can be caused by design problems, poor repairs, or human error by a crew member. Last year 14 Russian sailors were killed when a fire broke out on a secret Russian submarine. The boat was identified as  Losharik (AS-12), a nuclear-powered submarine that is widely believed to be a key asset for the Russian Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research, also known as GUGI. “On July 1, 14 submariners sailors died in Russian territorial waters as a result of inhaling combustion products aboard a research submersible vehicle designated for studying the seafloor and the bottom of the World Ocean in the interests of the Russian Navy after a fire broke out during bathymetric measurements,” read a translation of the statement from the state-controlled TASS news service.

Russia Joins China s Wuhan Virus Lie Campaign

From the beginning of the COVID-19/Wuhan virus epidemic, China s communist government has lied about the disease, its origin and its transmissibility. It has also avoided an accurate accounting of the contagion s health and economic consequences within the Peoples Republic, always insisting Chinese Communist Party leadership has minimized the pandemic s effects. We know for a fact that since early January 2020, CCP lies, denials and obfuscations have exacted a heavy worldwide price in human illness, in human lives lost and in economic damage. A Wall Street Journal article recently revealed Chinese officials didn t inform their own Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the December 2019 outbreak. That decision surely delayed China s own domestic response. As CCP elites conducted political damage control, Chinese citizens died.

A Bloody Good Time: The Top 10 Horror Films of 2020

Woof. What a year. I’m not one who subscribes to the idea that a calendar change will automatically mean bad times end, but I’m still glad to have 2020 in my rearview. Not even counting the bad things that happened in my own personal life, the world in general either went to hell or the hellscape became more prominently displayed. Don’t worry, I’m not going on a rant, but I am definitely glad 2020 is no longer a thing. And on top of all that, we at 411 lost Larry Csonka, a friend of mine who encouraged my work on this column. He enjoyed these end-of-the-year lists I do and particularly enjoyed it when I watched weird B-movies. I wrote about that, in the tribute we did, but not about how unusually hard it hit me because well, that column wasn’t about me. But yeah, Larry was a guy I got to know in the process of working with him seven or eight years, every weekday morning. I considered him a friend and for him to just suddenly be gone was numbing.
