Just before 7 oclock saturday night, investigators say she came to police herself to let them know she and her daughter were safe. Her mother who lives in the Central Valley and was distraught earlier in the day told u
Reporter firefighters are very familiar with these waters. But today went from a Training Mission to an actual training rescue. [ sirens ] reporter a dramatic rescue operation unfolded in the frigid waters off ocean beach. Seven of san franciscos most experienced firefighters and swimmers went overboard when the rescue boat they were training on capsized saturday morning. The conditions were pretty calm as i understand it. But i do understand there was a big wave that came up and flipped the boat. Reporter firefighters participating in the practice drill nearby came to the aid of the crew members helping pull a few from the water. The coast guard and people on a private boat lent a hand too. We went hiking and we ran into a fireman who said that there we heard five people were in the water, there were seven. And everybody was safe. Reporter four of the seven firefighters were taken to the hospital as a precaution. The rescue boat was left behind. Only the nose of the 30foot water craft
And the waves kind of picked up. Four of the seven people on board went to the hospital. The crew was out, of all things, training for a rescue when they needed a rescue themselves. Embarrassing, yes. But it was also lucky. All of our members were dressed appropriately in their safety gear that they would wear to affect a rescue they would be responding to. Reporter this is the first time anything like this has happened on the San Francisco Fire Department. It is launching an inpendent investigation into what happened. In the meantime, one firefighter is in the hospital and the boat is secured upside down in the water waiting to be recovered. The next step is to work with a company to actually extract the boat from the water. It is in a precarious position. We are working with sources to affect that. Reporter the boat is completely upside down in the water and because of that, the Fire Department isnt able to determine exactly how extensive the damage is that has been done to the boat.
