traveled to international falls, minnesota, where frigid is a way of life. it all starts with an early morning wake-up call. good morning. time to get up. reporter: terry is our local guide, a first grade teacher and mother of four. mornings in the winter are dark. nobody ever wants to get up, because they swear you are waking them up in the middle of the night. reporter: with temperature as low as negative 50, getting ready to venture out involves a great deal of strategy. it s snow pants and jackets and boots, and you have to find mittens and hats. reporter: the family moved here from texas 13 years ago. houses in international falls are not as big because you just can t heat them. good? yeah. half way there. reporter: cheering the runners on involves braving the cold. go, shannon! there s shannon brown. reporter: terry crossing the finish line, placing first among the local women. i did it!
at airports, frustrated travelers. almost 3,000 flights canceled and more than 2,000 delayed. the storm is barelying over the northeast. behind it, incredibly cold and intense winds that will last into the weekend. but the severe conditions in new york s central park didn t stop these people from having a little fun. we re actually waiting on some friends to play some touch football game. reporter: and when those friends showed up, it was game on. new york city remained under a winter storm watch overnight. the concern, dangerous roads and walking conditions. john and marci. thanks, tahman. now let s get forecast specifics about all this. oh, yeah. for those who want to know all the details about this cold, crazy weather we re going to go live to accuweather meteorologist jim dickey to get some stats. how are you doing, jim? doing good. it s cold, certainly. good news is we re seeing improvement, especially along the i-95 corridor all day tuesday.
you see the classic comma shaped. the comma stretching from virginia beach down to the south. that s an indication on the radar and satellite of a maturing storm system with that low taking over we ve improved new york city down i-95, baltimore and d.c. the heaviest of the snow, that s along the coast. that s where we ll keep that heavy snow in place through the next six or so hours. cape cod, heavy accumulations on the way, perhaps 6 additional inches on top of what s already on the ground. watching the back edge move into new york city. no snow at all right now. northern jersey, we watch that snow come to an end, not before many spots picked up close to a foot. many spots picked up over a foot in philadelphia. behind us, the cold surging below zero. these are your current temperatures across the northeast. minus 10 in burlington. minus 9 into syracuse. accuweather meteorologist jim dickey, thanks so much. new jersey getting especially hard hit by this
so who is feeling the worst of this, jim? as far as the cold is concerned, right now this particular cold shot, at least today, that is into new england, where the core of the cold is really set up. really, all the way back into the midwest, staying brutal here today. jim dickey, thank you very much. one other measure of just how cold this winter has been. check this out. all five of the great lakes are freezing up. that s one-fifth of all the fresh water on the planet. alex perez reports from indiana. reporter: it looks more like the north pole than midwest. this endless pool of ice is lake michigan, captured by a camera on a drone flying high above. you can see it s massive. reporter: last year only 38% of the great lakes were frozen over. this year researchers predict the ice coverage to be almost double that for january and february. coast guard petty officer brad houston says the extra ice has kept them busy responding to calls all season. a lot of people will see
