Pubs entering the Great British Pub Awards Community Hero category are in with the chance of scooping a £10,000 bonus for a registered charity or good cause of their choice. Thanks to generous support from category sponsor Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, all shortlisted finalists in the category will also receive £1,000 to donate, while the category winner will go on to take home £10,000 for a charity or good cause of their choice. The move follows on from Coke’s extensive support of last year’s awards​, which saw all category winners claim a grant for a business benefitting project for their outlet  or to donate money to a charity or good cause.

After a tough year we’re delighted to be back doing what we do best. The Clifton Arms has had a makeover thanks to prize money from a pub awards last year The focus at The Clifton Arms is always on the community, so when it came to carrying out the refurbishment, they made sure that the jobs went to local tradespeople who’ve been out of work or on furlough during the last year. Throughout lockdown last year and into 2021, the team have continued to make food available to those most in need, including free Easter lunches and fruit boxes, and more recently getting milk to vulnerable children and people that need shelter.

How is Coca-Cola helping pubs and bars reduce their carbon footprints?

‘Last chance saloon’: ‘For many, the concept of net zero can feel intangible and unachievable,’ SRA managing director, Juliane Caillouette-Noble said. Two new initiatives supported by Coca-Cola European Partners (CCEP), Net Zero Now and the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) have been launched across the UK on-trade. The Net Zero Pubs and Bars initiatives will dissect what “net zero” means for the UK on-trade, offer guidance on how operators can assess and reduce carbon their emissions and set a standard against which progress can be measured.  This aims to hand businesses the tools for a coherent and ambitious climate strategy through a three-step – calculate, mitigate, compensate – approach, and overcome a lack of relevant in-house expertise and resources highlighted in a recent report from the British Standards Institution (BSI). 

Coca Cola fund outdoor refurbishment at The Victoria, Newton

The new outdoor space A PUB which was crowned as lockdown heroes at a prestigious awards has revealed its new outdoor refurbishment after receiving funding for the project from Coca Cola. The Victoria in Newton-le-Willows was named as one of the winners at the 21st annual Great British Pub Awards last year for going the extra mile to support the community during the height of the first lockdown last spring. When the pub had to close in March, licensee Kath O’Neill set up a food bank on-site and started making food hampers each morning to deliver to those who were vulnerable and shielding in the community.

How have GBPA winners used the Coca-Cola Community funding?

Coca-Cola pledged £165,000 to be shared among the 2020 Great British Pub Awards Pub Heroes winners and can now reveal how the funding has helped businesses prepare for post-lockdown trade. As part of the drinks company’s special Community Pub Fund, each winner had the chance to submit an application of up to £10,000 to put towards a business improvement or towards a community project. The prize was funded as part of the $120m (£87.6m) global Coca-Cola system, donated to Covid-19 relief efforts in affected communities. The Victoria in Newton-le-Willows, Merseyside, took the title of Punch Pubs & Co Pub Hero thanks to its ability to rise to the challenge of supporting its community amid the pandemic with initiatives such as teaming up with a local food bank to deliver more than 12 tonnes of food for free and sourcing Easter eggs for local children.
