Notably, a full three-quarters of those winners ranging in scores from 85.45 to 88.38 involved controlled yeast fermentation in the post-production processing phase. All the winning lots will be heading to an auction taking place online on Thursday, March 25. ACE is currently selling sample sets of the coffees for $350, and auction registrations for $25. The quality competition and auction program is part of ACE’s ongoing Private Collection series, which launched in 2019 and features partnerships with origin-specific green coffee companies focused on the high-end specialty segment. It is separate from the group’s long-running Cup of Excellence competition and auction series.

Cup of Excellence Organizer ACE Partners with Oritain for Traceability Verification

Daily Coffee News file photo by Nick Brown Cup of Excellence (ACE) organizer the Alliance for Coffee Excellence is partnering with the multinational agricultural traceability company Oritain to verify the origin of coffees in the green coffee competition and auction program. According to Portland, Oregon-based ACE, Oritain will be maintaining a database using samples of coffees that have been purchased at auction. The database will create a kind of fingerprint for future traceability as it relates to where specifically coffees are grown, as opposed to the kind of DNA fingerprinting that would verify things such as variety or cultivar. In a response to a DCN inquiry, ACE said that while there has been no evidence of counterfeiting in regard to coffees submitted to COE competitions, the partnership with Oritain is designed to give producers and coffee buyers alike confirmation that competition coffees are authentic throughout their supply chain journey.

Confident Coffee Steps Forward in Northwest Arkansas

Confident founder and roaster Amber Dietrich now runs her Diedrich IR5 machine inside a roughly 1,600-square-foot space, about half of which houses the retail cafe, in the town of Johnson, just north of Fayetteville. Dietrich told Daily Coffee News that the cafe opening comes a bit sooner than was originally planned for the company, which roasted its first batches in March of last year. “It was my intention to build the roasting side of my business for a few years before jumping back into cafe operations, but COVID changed that,” Dietrich told DCN. “The majority of my sales were from offices, co-working spaces and cafes, so when the shutdown happened, I lost most of my business overnight.”
