Seven officials in Nelson Mandela Bay’s electricity department were suspended on Tuesday after an investigation into an explosion that occurred on 11 March at a crucial substation in the metro.
A full investigation has been launched into the explosion of a substation situated at the Coega Industrial Development Zone (IDZ) on Saturday night, which will cost the city at least R40m to fix.
Residents in Nelson Mandela Bay may experience water outages of up to a week at a time as the city blocked supply to some reservoirs in order to redirect water to areas that have not had water for days. In a statement on Sunday morning, mayor Retief Odendaal said the recent power outages coupled to the fact that residents had not reduced consumption exacerbated the crisis.
