Berkeley institution Moe s Books, one of the few remaining classic used bookstores in the city, has voted to unionize, citing many incidents of unsafe COVID-19 protocols in the store.
According to a press release issued by the union workers, there was almost unanimous support for organizing and joining the Industrial Workers of the World. On March 9, they say their union, Moe s Books Workers, was recognized by Doris Moskowitz, the store s owner. Over the past year, there have been many incidents where employees and valued Moe’s customers were put in danger by poor safety protocol, a statement from Moe s Books Workers reads. When staff members advocated for the safety of themselves and others, they were often ignored and even retaliated against.
