today in the government s brutal crackdown, aisle get a live update on the talks. today the republicans who want to be president are hoping kansas voters choose them. we are live at a caucus site. and newly released video shows the power of last week s tornado in west liberty, kentucky. new violence in syria is overshadowing high-stakes diplomatic efforts to stop the country s bloodshed. the president sat down but even as they talked of peace, akty vafts say tanks and artillery pounded more syrian cities. nic robertson is watching developments from neighboring beirut, lebanon. nic, a lot happening today. they re actually calling today s talks so positive, but has there been any real progress? if you look at what s happening on the ground in syria, you have to say there s been absolutely zero progress toward a cease-fire, which is his specific aim, his number one objective while in syria is to get a cease-fire, as he says, not only from the government but also from the
we can t set that to the side. this is a fundamental part of what has gone wrong in detroit and in other cities that are running into councilwoman, the conservative line on detroit i think is it is exactly a vision of what big government run amuck and liberal misgovernance looks like and i d like to hear your response to that. the american dream has always been centered on the right of every family to have a quality of life and that is absolutely one that includes detroit. when you look at the fact that 1.4 million american jobs have been saved by the comeback of the auto industry that is an american success story and one that cannot be marginalized into some kind of big government. that is not fair. it s not correct. guys, let me add that, you know, the civic innovation, i m talking about isn t limited to the grassroots. there is innovation occurring in govenance. we at knight foundation have invested in code for america which is a new natural
of legislation. let me describe in general what we are talking about here. giving states control of the etiquette program, which is something that conservatives have been fighting for for year. everyone of my budgets that i wrote as the conservative gold standard for republicans was to give states control of medicaid. and on the tax fraud, we have long been saying that we need equalize the tax care bill that code for america. it discovered its people who do not get health care from their jobs. there is a huge tax benefit if you get health care at work. if you ve got to go buy your health insurance, no tax benefit for you. what conservatives have long said is let s equalize the tax treatment for health care so it doesn t matter if you get health care at work when not at work, let s give you the same kind of tax benefit. you can go buy back what you want to buy. go into the free market as a consumer and buy the plan of your choosing with health savings accounts as well.
in favor of tax reform. when you look at the budget that we passed out of the house it did include tax reform. we believe in a flatter, fairer tax code for america. we believe that it is important to our competitiveness. does that envision increased revenues? we believe that it is important that we look at it all at once and in a broader context of tax reform and we are concerned that it s going to be difficult to accomplish that in two weeks. we do not support raising taxes on our small business owners that are our job creators right now. bottom line when push comes to shove and you have to take a vote on whether to raise the debt krooling, are you willing to vote against raising the debt ceiling and let the chips fall where they may in terms of the economy? it s a difficult call. no one wants to see america default. i don t want to see america default.
