data recorders better known to many as black boxes. what can we learn or ascertain about what likely contributed to this crash? we ll know everything. we ll hear the last recording of the cockpit crew. their actual voices but all of the indications, every moment of the controls every moment of the engine thrust controls everything will be recorded on that data recorder. and we haven t heard that yet, it hasn t been found yet. does it appear that this crash may have may have been incurred some sosht of kas strofic failure once they did not get the go ahead to go to higher altitude? i don t know. that s a tough one. i mean, judgment call as a pilot, i would be very surprised to hear that they tried to get over the weather because the weather was way up in the high 40s, low 50s for the tops. this airplane didn t have the
distress call. that tells me that whatever happened consumed the time of the cockpit crew, the captain and the first officer. and that s not unusual. if you look at the recent cases, they are dealing with whatever is happening. they are whatever took place as a result of the bad weather and that climb that we now believe what was happening when the incident took place, they are dealing with it. and, of course, if you are in a deep storm, the plane is falling out of the sky, you are trying to work out first of all, you may not realize what sort of a bad situation you are in and, secondly, how to get out of it and the last thing you are necessarily doing is thumbing the mike and shouting mayday, mayday. mary, investigators are taking all of the facts that they know of this case, trying to piece them together to find the most likely outcome where they can find the plane. what do you think investigators are making of reports that the
plane. that doesn t matter. this is an international issue. you ve been talking to people about this investigation. what is the latest that you re hearing? right now there s no suspicion of anybody, the cockpit crew or the passengers or the ground crew. at this time although they do the investigation and they look at that and try to look at everybody that was on that plane and look at the baggage that was loaded. but so far there s no suspicion of that. as david mentioned, they re hoping to find the wreckage find the black boxes and get the key determination to what brought it down. that s the only way we are going to know. david, there s this screen grab. it reportedly well it was leaked by an indonesian air traffic controller that appears to show that this flight was rising in altitude but it was losing speed. this is a very bad combination. cnn can t validate the authenticity of this image, but when you re looking at that e explain what could have happened. at this point, in
i guess not? i guess not too. this is a very very sophisticated airplane and it constantly communicating at several levels with the ground. we ll find something out over the next several hours. it s very very clear that the cockpit crew was not able to send any kind of a message. it happened so quickly. you know, as we look again at the map it s not an unsafe area to fly correct? it was having obviously very bad weather as we look at that weather map, this area does have a lot of monsoons typhoons but active area for flights going in all directions from what we ve heard, mike. absolutely. this is not like an airplane was in airspace it shouldn t have been in per se. it s really an issue of an airplane that flew into some kind of condition that may have triggered something to bring the airplane down. we ll know probably within the next several hours. when you hear these reports i m imagining what it s like to be you hearing again on the news of another missing aircraft.
that vicinity. and the fact that the malaysian prime minister was saying there was no distress call from the cockpit of that malaysian airliner, what does that say about the destruction of this aircraft? well in some previous shootdowns there have been the cockpit crew knew what was going on, somebody says we ve been hit, what s going on on. you might get that off the cockpit voice recorder. in this case the crew may not have had time to radio a distress call. in an airplane in an emergency, the priorities are aviate, navigate, mun kate. you got to navigate the flaen, figure out where you re going and then you ve got to talk to others. so the fact that there was no distress call may mean they didn t know what was happening. but it may mean they didn t have time to communicate it. and the cockpit voice recorder is probably on the ground there
