My regrets about our departure from the European Union are bound up with an encounter that occurred as a result of a friend and I having set out, on a summer’s day in 1969 when I’d just turned 21, to hitch-hike through, as it turned out, no fewer than seven countries.
On our backs we carried a tent of the sort that kids might play in, a camping-gas stove and a couple of dirt-cheap sleeping bags. In our pockets were traveller’s cheques to the value of £50 apiece – this being the maximum amount of cash (not that we had more anyway) it was permissible to take out of a UK in the grip of one of its perennial economic crises.

exactly those two things. however, we want to get the coal community back to work. we recognize that the united states is on the verge of energy independence, which is going to shift the balance of power once again in the world. one other thing about our energy, stephanie, super important for american people to know this, it can be a huge revenue source for us to pay down some of the excess liabilities we have and some of the social welfare payments and some of the things like that that everybody is worried about when you look at the long-term liabilities of the american budget. for me, we need to balance this whole thing with clean air, clean water, but we have to get america energy independent and think about it in the most praktdical way. i would caution people to think about us as being the people that are going to wreck the environment. you can look outside of the united states and you can see that going on in places where you can t breathe. i m not going to mention those places,
