Over two lakh students move to Kota annually to prepare for competitive exams such as the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for engineering and the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to medical colleges.
Authorities in Kota, Rajasthan have requested coaching institutes to suspend routine tests for students preparing for competitive exams such as NEET and JEE for the next two months. This decision comes after a series of suicides by aspirants. So far in 2023, 22 students have taken their lives, the highest recorded in any year. The recent suicides were allegedly due to the pressure of scoring low marks in the coaching centers routine tests.
