The England national football team will contest a major championship final for the first time in over half a century (55 years, to be exact), when they take on Italy at Wembley on Sunday. Standing in the dugout, just as he has been for the better of five years, will be head coach Gareth Southgate. And standing right alongside him, just as he has been for the better part of eight years, will be Steve Holland.
His importance is often overlooked, which is why this is a perfect time to (re-)watch his excellent Coaches’ Voice episode from last year, wherein he talks about his formative years as a young coach (got started at just 21, becoming fully licensed by 22), his various experiences at Chelsea (especially focusing on the 2011-12 season, both the lows of AVB and the highs of Napoli and Barcelona), as well as England’s 2018 World Cup campaign.

Welcome to the Red Bulls Round-Up presented by

The transfer window is always an interesting time for me. I see all of these players moving, changing their lives, doing something new. I look inward and wonder, “What am I doing with my life? Would I have the courage and wherewithal to pick up everything and move halfway across the world to a new location?” The answer is a resounding “no chance,” so perhaps followers of the sport should be a little kinder to those struggling to immediately adjust to an unfamiliar environment, one in which they are expected to succeed at a competitive and challenging task.
He chose to come to us, and trusted us, Marsch said Wednesday at the coaching webinar. He learned how to play center-half; we taught him our mentality. Now he s captain of the U.S. national team. In high-level football you meet way too many fixed mentality people. You want growth mentalities. Those committed to the process. It s incredibly important.
Specifically, the combination of pressing commitment and ability for even defenders to be able to move the ball forward to start counters has been important to Long s development into one of the best center backs in MLS. The Red Bulls reportedly drew substantial interest in Europe for the 28-year-old but declined to sell him because of his importance to the squad.
