A considerable step up in competition exposed the No. 16 Virginia men s basketball team as deficient in areas that have been staples under Coach Tony Bennett, who spent much of Saturday s 98-75 drubbing against No. 1 Gonzaga with hands on hips, incredulous to what was unfolding at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
Among the most alarming failures was permitting the Bulldogs to shoot 60.3 percent as the Cavaliers (4-2) gave up by far their most points of the young season. No opponent had shot that well against Virginia, typically a defensive juggernaut, since 2008 - one season before Bennett took over.

The 16th-ranked Virginia men s basketball team draws a high-profile opponent for the first time this season when it faces No. 1 Gonzaga on Saturday afternoon in a game that came together after the coronavirus pandemic impacted both programs.
The first component to setting up just the third all-time meeting between the schools unfolded when the Bulldogs revealed earlier this month that one player and one staff member tested positive, leading to a postponement of their showdown with No. 2 Baylor on Dec. 5.
Several days later, at least one unspecified member of the Cavaliers tested positive the night before they were scheduled to play No. 12 Michigan State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Virginia officials informed the Spartans, who had already arrived in Charlottesville, the game would need to be postponed.
