WACO, Texas The Baylor Bears are NCAA champions. And it s a big deal for all of Waco - Baylor University is the heart and soul of the city.
But to truly understand what this title means to the men s basketball program, we have to go back to the early 2000s. That s when head coach Scott Drew first came to Baylor and took on what was then considered to be college basketball s most daunting job.
It was August 22, 2003. Coach Drew s first press conference as Baylor s new head coach. And he made some bold promises to Bears fans everywhere.

WACO, TX â Baylor Athletics says it will not accept a local car dealer s championship car gift following the general manager s hood comment.
Ted Teague, general manager for Allen Samuels Dodge Chrysler Jeep, was at the Baylor men s basketball celebratory parade to gift Head Coach Scott Drew a Jeep.
During an interview with a local television station, Teague said Coach Drew could use the Jeep to recruit some people out of the hood.
The next day, Teauge took to Facebook to issue an apology, saying he sadly misspoke using the word hood in reference to neighborhood.
Baylor Bears can’t sleep and won’t sleep with the excitement.
Jared Butler expressed his excitement for his team and hasn’t gone to sleep yet.
Many questioned Baylor’s ability to win a championship but Head Coach Scott Drew knew better. Eighteen years ago when Drew joined Baylor he had the mindset of winning a national championship. The day has come.
Drew is excited for his team and fans stating “it’s long overdue for the state and so pleased for all of them,” in winning a championship.
In 2003 Head Coach Drew had the same winning mentality.
“I did not come to go to the NCAA tournament. We came to win games at the NCAA tournament,” Drew stated, “We came with the chance to win a national championship at Baylor University.”
