Inverclyde Shed team up with local schools for new project

YOUNG gardeners in schools are being supported in their outdoor endeavours by Inverclyde Shed. Bruce Newlands and the team at the Shed have linked up with 12 schools across the area to develop small growing spaces . The gardens are being created with help from some of a £5,000 grant Shed received through the Co-op Community Fund. To get the gardens up and running, Bruce and the team are giving schools hollowed-out whisky barrels to serve as vegetable planters. They re also supplying compost, bean canes and fruit trees to schools. They will also be on hand to provide teachers and pupils with help and advice on what to plant throughout the year.

Grants were handed out to schools, to support groups and volunteer organisations. At least one per cent of the Society’s trading profit is reinvested in local communities in a bid to help local projects. Black Dog Judo Club, based in Bungay, will use £4,950 to pay for new specialist flooring to ensure that it can reopen safely following the lockdown. Mark Purllant, from the club, said: “We are so chuffed and very thankful to Central England Co-operative for their generosity and understanding of our community project.”

Co-op helps Woodland pupils get active

16 Dec 2020 GETTING FIT: Staff and pupils at Woodland School are delighted with the new outdoor gym equipment funded by a Co-op community grant CHILDREN at Woodland Primary School have been enjoying keeping fit with new outdoor gym equipment, thanks to a grant from the Co-op Community Fund. The Co-op Local Community Fund supports projects across the UK. Every time a member buys a Co-op branded product or service, money is given to local causes. The school received £1,244.13 from the fund, allowing it to get a cross trainer, single slalom and a double slalom. The three pieces have been installed in the school’s playground and are popular with the children. Staff have even tried them out.
