CHANDIGARH/SHIMLA: Punjab and Himachal Pradesh on Thursday declared free vaccination for the 18-to-44 age group in their government hospitals from May 1.
Anticipating the initial supply of vaccine to be limited, Punjab chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh formed an expert group with virologist Dr Gagandeep Kang, CMCVellore community health professor Dr Jacob John, and PGI School of Public Health former head Dr Rajesh Kumar to suggest prioritisation in the new category.
The team has a week to ready its plan. Special invitee Dr Kang sees geographical saturation in high-caseload cities such as Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar, Mohali, and Patiala and recommends prioritisation on the basis of medical need (serious comorbidities first) and occupation such as teacher.
