Amongst those celebrating todays birthday, the staff of a nearby care home. Captain tom has become a local hero. And these birthday celebrations go far and wide. Jersey, tamworth and downing street. Captain tom, i know i speak for the whole country when i say we wish you a very happy 100th birthday. But the most startling sight is this. Captain toms birthday cards. 140,000 of them. Very emotional. Its amazing. Im really proud because ive known my grandad all my life and lived with him all my life and hes always been there for us. He has made us think you can be whatever you can be. And there was more. Captain tom is now an honorary colonel. There was also today a letter from the queen and the congratulations and birthday greetings from around the world continue to arrive. It was quite a day for captain tom. As we have been watching all morning, the families joining us down at the memorial reading the names, every single name of a life lost on 9 11 will be read at that service. Also six moments of silence observed, another one coming up here in just a few minutes. The stories vary depending on who you talked to. For some it is cathartic. Sarah fisher was 4 years old when her father was killed on 9 11. Shes 17 now. This helps her feel closer to her dad. For others like the aldermans who lost their son peter at 38, they dont want to be down here, its too hard. They listen every year for his name to be read. Its unimaginable its been 13 years in time since this happened.
