Objectors say common sense has prevailed as Mirfield housing plan is refused

A CONTROVERSIAL plan to build houses on a watermeadow that floods in heavy rain has been thrown out. Campaigners have fought a long battle to stop a 67-home estate going up at Granny Lane in Mirfield. The proposals by Wakefield-based Miller Homes have pinballed back and forth between various committees at Kirklees Council. Now they have been refused. It was a tight victory for locals opposed to the plan, with the seven-member Strategic Planning Committee voting 4-3. Planning officers said none of the houses being planned would be built in the area of land worst affected by flooding. But councillors said they were not confident that measures being suggested to tackle flooding would work.

Call for greater enforcement action against developers who leave mud on road

DEVELOPERS who cover roads with mud and other detritus from building sites could face enforcement action following calls for a crackdown. There was cross-party support for Kirklees Council to more strictly monitor builders in the borough after pictures and video emerged of lorries at the massive Mirfield 25 site leaving trails of mud on the A62 Leeds Road. The matter came to a head at the council’s Strategic Planning Committee when Clr Martyn Bolt (Con, Mirfield) said some roads had become hazardous with cars at risk of skidding and that the problem had gone on for a year. The committee agreed to enforce planning conditions – including ensuring developers use wheel or pressure washers on vehicles – and requested an update by the next meeting on January 27.
