Amarnath Yatra was suspended on Thursday due to bad weather as rains lashed the Kashmir Valley, officials said. The annual pilgrimage had commenced on Monday following the cloudburst that occurred on July 8.
In view of the cloudburst incident, the Amarnath yatra has been temporarily suspended. However, the pilgrims are still waiting at Baltal Base camp for it to recommence.
The IMD has an automatic weather station near the Amarnath cave shrine which provides weather forecasts during the pilgrimage. However, the surrounding mountains do not have any weather monitoring stations due to their inaccessibility.
Nine people died and several were injured after a cloudburst near Amarnath cave in Jammu and Kashmir on Friday. The incident occurred following heavy rainfall in the upper reaches of the shrine. The cloudburst was reported at 5.30pm and rescue operation is currently underway by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and other
