The historic punishment handed down Friday to a former police officer for George Floyd s murder evoked both community relief and resolve for more action in the long struggle to end racial injustice.
While acknowledging nothing would compensate for Floyd s death under the knee of Derek Chauvin, activists who have pushed for accountability said they felt some sense of justice from the 22 ½-year prison sentence, a rare punishment of an officer.

(KNSI) – A 35-year-old Waite Park man has been charged with five counts of non-firearm kidnapping, one count of first-degree aggravated robbery and one count of second-degree assault for allegedly wielding a pair of scissors during a standoff with law enforcement at the Wells Fargo along 33rd Ave. South in St. Cloud.
Ray Reco McNeary is accused of holding five Wells Fargo employees hostage after attempting to rob the bank Thursday afternoon. Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, responded to the scene. The event began shortly before 2 p.m., and authorities took McNeary into custody around 10:30 p.m.

Ray Reco McNeary, 35, told both hostages and law enforcement he intended to kill the employees, according to court documents. He said he wanted to “go viral” and to be a “martyr and also threatened to kill himself or put law enforcement in a position to kill him.

Update, 10:40 a.m. Friday, May 7th:
(KNSI) – The suspect in a St. Cloud bank robbery and hostage situation will be charged by the Stearns County Attorney’s Office later today with aggravated robbery, kidnapping and second-degree assault.
The 35-year-old male suspect was apprehended at the scene Thursday night and is currently being held in the Stearns County Jail.
The St. Cloud Police Department confirms that no one was physically injured during the incident, and a firearm was not located at the scene or on the suspect.
