CAATSA sanctions are hurting Turkey’s military readiness at a time when NATO can’t afford it May 6, 2021 Share On Dec. 14, 2020, the Trump administration sanctioned Turkey’s Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB), along with key individuals involved in the purchase of the Russian-made S-400 surface-to-air missile system. The sanctions were issued under the 2017 Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), a law intended to punish Russia for a wide range of malign activities. While Turkey’s decision to purchase the S-400 one of several decisions that have expanded Russia’s presence in Turkey in recent years[1] presents serious risks to NATO defenses and the F-35 in particular, responding with CAATSA sanctions undermines both the military capabilities and combat readiness of a key member of the transatlantic alliance.

While the Chinese military has been on a tear of introducing new weapons systems and platforms, this past week was remarkable even compared to their recent pace of rapid military expansion. The Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy, or “PLAN”, launched three newly commissioned warships and released a fascinating new video showcasing operations on their newest and first domestically produced aircraft carrier, the Shandong Type 002 this past week.

Mighty Ike: The U S Navy s Second Nimitz-class Aircraft Carrier Is a Beast

This warship fought throughout the Cold War and has recently served on a record seven month deployment. Despite the rivalry between the United States Army and United States Navy, few sailors seem to complain that they’re deployed on a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier named for the former General of the Army and later President of the United States Dwight D. Eisenhower. Commissioned in 1977, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN-69) is the second of the ten  Nimitz-class aircraft carriers currently in service. Originally named USS  Eisenhower, much like the lead ship USS  Nimitz, during the construction the name was changed to the present form. As with the other carriers of her class, she was constructed at Newport News Shipbuilding Company in Virginia and since entering service has been overhauled twice. USS
