Wokingham Conservative leader reacts to 2021 Local Election

The leader of the Wokingham Conservatives has celebrated after the party held the line in the Local Elections 2021. The result saw the Conservatives hold on to their majority on the council and unseat the leader of the Wokingham Labour party Andy Croy. However, the Liberal Democrats gained three seats at the expense of the Conservatives, as six Conservative councillors chose to retire ahead of the elections. Giving his opinion on the result, re-elected councillor and Wokingham Conservative leader John Halsall said:  “I’m really pleased with the result, we have the same majority as we were. “We have lost some great and good councillors. Fresh faces on Wokingham Council after Local elections 2021

There will be eight fresh faces on Wokingham Borough Council following the Local Elections this year. That’s because seven councillors elected in 2016 chose not to run for another term this year, and one incumbent councillor was defeated in the election. In Wokinghan Borough, councillors are elected for four year terms. However, because elections were postponed in 2020 due to the pandemic, those councillors elected in 2016 got to serve another year. Here is a look at the eight fresh faces that will be taking up places on the council. Buildings placed for brand new school in Wokingham A BRAND new school in Wokingham has just had its first modules lifted into place, making a huge leap in construction progress. The Keys Academy Trust, which is currently still being built in Matthewsgreen, Wokingham, had its first phase of modules placed earlier this month, making up the majority of the primary school building. The 210-place school has had most of its construction take place off-site to cut carbon emissions in the building process. Cllr UllaKarin Clark, executive member for children’s services, said: “It’s great to see the buildings taking shape now the modules have arrived on site at Matthews Green.

500 children without laptops for home learning in Wokingham

“We are also working with the voluntary and community sector to get recycled IT equipment. “But we are relying on the schools to tell us when somebody needs these.” She added: “If somebody has any laptops at home they are not using, it would be very useful if they could contact us and we could help to distribute those to the schools.” The Conservative-run council has provided children and care leavers in Wokingham with more than 280 laptops during the pandemic. It has also been working with the Department of Education to help them access 4G and obtain Wi-Fi routers. The government says it is investing over £400 million in supporting disadvantaged children who need help accessing technology during the pandemic.
