There was overwhelming support for a call for more houses to be built, at a recent Kildare County Council meeting.
And there was criticism of the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP) system, which provides financial assistance for households who qualify for social housing and who are trying to rent a home on the private market.
There are about 2,400 people receiving HAP within County Kildare but Cllr Noel Connolly said the only long term answer is for public housing to be built on publicly-owned land.
He said that HAP limits are too low to allow families or individuals to actually avail of much of the rented accommodation that is available in the county.

Leixlip has “twice as many” litter bins as Celbridge even though its population is smaller, the February monthly meeting of Kildare County Council was told.
Cllr Ide Cussen claimed this was because Leixlip had a town council previously. The councillor and her colleagues made a number of contributions about how litter management methods (Kildare County Council spends €2m annually on street cleaning alone) should change.
There were calls for more community wardens to combat the proliferation of litter, especially dog faeces as well as overflowing litter bins.
Councillors call for Monasterevin school site to be converted into housing for older people

Kildare County Council has agreed to write to the Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin to suggest that St Paul’s Secondary School be converted into housing for older people when it is vacated.
Pupils from the school in the heart of the town are relocating to a new school premises in the grounds of Moore Abbey.
Cllr Noel Connolly had called on the Council to make contact with the Diocese of Kildare and Leighlin to explore the provision of housing for older people on the current site of St Paul’s School in Monasterevin, which is due to be vacated within the next two years.
Anger at cancer-causing asbestos dumped beside Canal

Locals in the Sallins area were shocked this week after a load of potentially dangerous asbestos sheeting was dumped near Digby Bridge.
It s believed the hazardous material was deposited on the side of the road on Friday night or the early hours of Saturday morning as community members had cleaned up the area in the days previously.
Local gardaí are investigating.
Asbestos can cause lung cancer, scarring of the lung tissue and cancer of the lining of the chest and the lining of the abdominal cavity.
Removing or transporting asbestos-containing material is a complex procedure and must only be done by a specialist contractor.
