Stockton Council has urged schools to review their uniform policies “as a matter of urgency” after finding high costs are putting an increased burden on parents.  Cllr Steve Nelson told cabinet colleagues how he himself had suffered “uniform segregation” in the 1960s at a meeting on Thursday (December 17).  And he later revealed how high uniform costs had triggered a severe hardship for one family.

A PROBE into school uniform costs has found some families are cutting back on food to pay clothing bills. Stockton Council has urged schools to review their uniform policies “as a matter of urgency” after finding high costs are putting an increased burden on parents.  Cllr Steve Nelson told cabinet colleagues how he himself had suffered “uniform segregation” in the 1960s at a meeting on Thursday. And he later revealed how high uniform costs had triggered a severe hardship for one family.  Cllr Nelson said: “We had a case of someone in the region who borrowed £50 off a loan shark to help pay for a school uniform and ended up owing £30,000.
