No-go zones HAVING lived in Richmond for several years and Richmondshire for many years before that, I’ve recently become very concerned with the rise in anti-social behaviour in Richmond and the lack of response from the authorities. This seems to be the result of the crowds flocking to the falls after its promotion as the “Ibiza of the North”. Word seems to have got out that this kind of behaviour is accepted in Richmond and it has attracted a very unsavoury element. There are regular gatherings of youths on the river bank indulging in underage drinking, smoking and drug taking. They are then rowdy and aggressive in the protection of their “turf”.
A garage, a front room and caravans have featured through the years. Take a look:
Picture: NORTH NEWS Taken in 1999, this photo shows Marian Clane whose front room in the village of Dinsdale, Cleveland, was turned into a polling station for the day. She is chatting to a villager after he cast his vote. This 1999 picture shows Cllr Steve Kay, Bruce McKenzie and a local resident at a polling station in Lingdale, Redcar and Cleveland.
Picture: RICHARD DOUGHTY By early afternoon in 2000, only 10 per cent of the electorate had voted at Knaresborough Forst Cricket Club. Then presiding officer Steve Pilling and poll clerk Dorothy Kirby are shown waiting for voters.
Verge mowing OH dear, the roadside mowers have started already. Hardly has the grass started to grow than the verges are being shaved off down to the soil. Not even a daisy left. Between Easingwold and Thirsk on the A19 the mowing has begun at Hutton Sessay crossroads right up to the entrance to Thirkleby Hall. It is particularly bad around Thirkleby Barugh. Not a chance for any wild flowers to grace the sides of the A19. Verges are an important habitat for wildlife. Lots of gardeners are encouraged to make part of their gardens into a wildflower patch, yet acres of roadsides are mown into domestic lawns.
Travellers Rest IN response to David Wilkinson (no relation to my husband Dave Wilkinson) and his letter “Pub dreams” (D&S Times letters, Mar 26). I was saddened to read the views of Mr Wilkinson regarding the anticipated reopening of the much missed Travellers Rest in Skeeby. Unlike him I do not consider Skeeby as my village, more our village and as such am hoping that Skeeby Community Pub Society (SCPS) are able to successfully negotiate a mutually acceptable deal with the current owner and bring back a valuable community asset which will offer the residents of Skeeby and its visitors a place in which to “sample local food and drink enjoy a feeling of relaxation, companionship and community togetherness” and potentially so much more.
