Demand for school enrollments in Kildare could be a “ticking time bomb,” a county councillor has told a public meeting which heard of major concerns over school places in the county.
Cllr Angela Feeney was speaking on a request by a number of councillors for information on school capacity at Kildare County Council’s plenary meeting on January 25.
Cllr Feeney said 27% of the population of north Kildare was under 18 and school places needed to be built for all the new and planned housing.

Flooding concerns are affecting plans for the nearby extension of Confey Cemetery in Leixlip and alternative sites will have to be considered, a public meeting has been told.
At the January 22 meeting of Kildare County Council’s Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District, Cllr Bernard Caldwell asked for an update on the extension of Confey cemetery.
The members were told that recent investigations by Kildare County Council, in conjunction with the HSE, found the ground in the lands adjacent to the existing cemetery at Confey to be unsuitable for interments. It will therefore not be possible to extend the cemetery. “Alternative sites will have to be considered,” they said of the council controlled cemetery.

Work will continue on four Kildare County Council community park projects in Celbridge and Leixlip this year but the funding for them is unclear.
The council will work on a Leixlip playground, The Wonderful Barn, a youth facility for Celbridge and sensory garden for St Catherines Park.
At the Celbridge-Leixlip Municipal District meeting on January 22 Cllr Nuala Killeen asked the council to outline what actions and preparations are underway to prepare projects for the municipal district where funding might become available throughout 2021?
Leasing social houses is bad value long term councillors tell meeting

Kildare County Council and the public will get bad value in housing from long term leasing, its monthly meeting has been told.
At the council’s full meeting on December 21, Cllr Aidan Farrelly asked for information on the decision-making process regarding Long Term Leasing agreements for housing, the role of council in this process and what policy determines this process.
He said it appeared that the council would get very bad value from the leasing when it had to hand back leased houses to the developer after 25 years.
